‘Bought’ movie, view free until Mar. 6

Sometimes I feel discouraged about the direction the world is moving in and wonder what it will be like when my children are raising children.  I wonder if they will have the freedom to make choices that are in line with their beliefs and values.  Will they be able to choose (for example) home birth, home education, and alternative health care choices for their children?

Last week I watched the new documentary Bought with dh, dd14 and ds12.

The goal of this program is to open a conversation about who is manufacturing our food and medicines, who is dictating policies regarding both, and how this is affecting our health.  We don’t have much transparency in these areas and consumers deserve to know more about this so we can make informed choices for our families.

This program confirmed much of what I already know, but it didn’t depress me.  Actually, it gave me hope.  Hope that there are a lot more people out there who are doing the research that I’m doing, who are coming to conclusions that I’ve come to, who are concerned about the same things that concern me.

As dh said when we finished watching, it was very nice to feel that we’re not alone.

‘Bought’ is available to watch online for free until March 6.  It raises valid issues that would be of concern to almost all of us if we knew what was involved.  I’m a proponent of the concept of ‘informed consent’, and we can’t make informed choices when critical information is withheld for the sake of financial profits.  I would love to believe that people are rising up and demanding transparency from the major manufacturers, but the real power will come from a critical mass of educated parents making these demands in unison.

  1. I saw it with my husband the other night. It was excellently made and very powerful. Such great information! (We were left a bit depressed, though…)

    1. To me the encouraging part about this movie is that it’s raising awareness and the more people who understand the stakes, the more chance of positive change that will benefit us all. These companies are so hugely powerful that very few people can stand against them without being destroyed but when you see people willing to stand up and speak out despite the consequences, being willing to share their perspective and paradigm with others, it gives me hope.

  2. My husband and I have been watching it over the last couple of days – such an important movie to watch both to learn the issues involved and also to understand the evils of all corporations who care only about profits and not a bit about their employees or anyone else they hurt.

I just got an email from the filmmaker that the free viewing time was extended to March 15 – so anyone who hasn’t had a chance to see it still can!

Thanks Avivah for telling us about this film – I would never have heard about it otherwise.

  3. Thanks for posting this. I’m in middle of watching it now. I’m just wondering, did anyone else have issues with the sound going off at certain parts during the movie or is it just on my end? I’m about halfway through and so far it’s gone off at 3 different points.

    1. I didn’t have any trouble – sometimes stopping and starting again can help. Hopefully you were able to watch it in it’s entirety by now!

      1. Thanks – I missed a few minutes here and there, but otherwise I was able to watch the whole thing. Definitely some food for thought!
